Prof. PIOTR SUTT PH. D.

Piotr Sutt was born in 1965. He graduated from the S. Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk, the Instrumental Department. He continued education with prof. Werner Thärichen in Berlin. He became a Doctor of Music Arts at the I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, Acknowledged at the K. Lipinski Academy of Music in Wrocław, and in 2012 he was granted the title of Professor of Musical Arts by the President of Poland.

He constantly develops as a musician and pedagogue. His many roles include a rich variety of functions: not only a soloist, but also a renowned chamber musician performing inspiring recitals, monographic and symphonic concerts in many famous music festivals throughout Europe and in the Americas. (Among others: International Festival of Contemporary Music in Athens, International Marimba Festival in Villahermosa – Mexico, Festival of New Percussion Music in Hannover, Days of Percussion Italy PAS, International Percussion Festivals in Lithuania, Switzerland, France, Bulgaria and Russia, The Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music).

He has made many recordings of solo and chamber percussion classics and the latest technically daring pieces in the contemporary music for the Polish Radio and Pi Dance Theatre in New York. Having played many premieres, he contributed to the promotion of the world-class percussion music, both in solo and chamber formats. (For example: Concerto for Percussion and Symphony Orchestra by W. Thärichen, Concerto Ostinato by K.H. Köper for Vibraphone and String Orchestra, Samba Classique for two marimbas and string orchestra by K.H. Köper – masterpiece dedicated to duo Katarzyna Myćka and Piotr Sutt, Concerto for Vibraphone and chamber orchestra by Prof. B. Schaeffer – dedicated to the soloist and the Dialogues for two percussionists and chamber orchestra by P.A. Komorowski – composition dedicated to Bartłomiej and Piotr Sutt). Among others he cooperated with: Z. Mehta, G. Crumb, St. Reich, P. Boulez, J. Tate, E. Séjourné, J. Beck, N. Rosauro, Ch. Mangione, The Israel Symphony Orchestra, J. Wooton, A. Åstrand, J. Nandayapa, J. Hill, W. Rowicki, L. Możdżer, J. Rappe, W. Michniewski, N. Kukulska, M. Urbaniak, R. Przemyk, A. Andrus, A. Rojek, K. Bednarek, Bach Ensemble – Meinz, The National Philharmonic Orchestra of Poland in Warsaw, Polish Baltic Philharmonic, Poznań Philharmonic, Łódź Philharmonic, Szczecin Philharmonic, Polish Chamber Choir Schola Cantorum Gedanensis, MozART Group, Raz Dwa Trzy and Me Myself And I.

Since 2015 he is an artistic director of the National Percussion Workshops in Gdańsk under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. In 1999 – 2003 he was the artistic director of the International Percussion Music Festivals in Kalisz.

In the year 1990, as the principal timpanist, he has started his cooperation with Polish Chamber Philharmonic. He is the founder and leader of the actively performing Gdańsk Jeunesses Musicales Percussion Ensemble and The Bacewicz Percussion Ensemble. Since 2016, he is one of the Innovative Percussion artists.

He teaches at the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź, where he is employed as a full professor – Head of the Percussion Department. Since 1985 he has been teaching percussion and chamber music classes at the High School of Music in Gdańsk and at the National Consultative Centre for Percussion and Percussion Chamber Music in Gdańsk. His engagement in pedagogical activities has resulted in many excellent graduates, soloists, chamber musicians and winners of famous international competitions i.e.: in the USA, Mexico, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium and Lithuania. Every year he is invited to the jury of renowned world festivals, competitions and master workshops and music courses.

Since 2006 he has been an artistic director, originator and conductor of the Children’s Oncology Orchestra at the ISKIERKA Foundation for Children with Cancer.

Piotr Sutt has developed an innovative training project and workshops on creativity, self-presentation, communication, and management – based on many years of artistic and pedagogical experience – and he has worked throughout Europe for the largest companies and corporations.
